Today the liturgical calendar takes a turn, as the focus of Advent shifts from primarily looking forward to the Second Coming of Christ to preparing our hearts for the remembrance and celebration of his coming in the Nativity at Bethlehem.
A cherished part of the liturgical tradition are the “O Antiphons.” There are the antiphons used before the Gospel Canticle at Vespers (Evening Prayer) from December 17 to December 23. They are the inspiration for the popular Advent hymn “O Come, O Come Emmanuel”. For the next seven days, at 3:00pm each day. we will be sharing an image from the collection of clip art by Br. Steve Erspamer, CM, the English and Latin texts of the antiphons, and a link to listen to the antiphon chanted in Latin according to the setting of the Liber Usualis.
May they help you in your prayer these last days of Advent.
