The Solemnity of the Ascension: The Feast Who Was Thursday

Ascension1

Ascension Thursday marks forty (40) days after the Resurrection. So why are we celebrating on Sunday.   The General Norms of the Liturgical Year and Calendar states:

  1. On the fortieth day after Easter the Ascension is celebrated, except in places where, not being a holy day of obligation, it has been transferred to the Seventh Sunday of Easter.

Depending where you live will determine whether you will celebrate Ascension Thursday or Ascension Sunday. In our Archdiocese we celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension on the Sunday.
