The process by which a person is formally recognized as a saint is long one.  The late Archbishop of San Salvador, Oscar Romero, took an important step in that direction.  Several news outlets have reported that the group of theologians at the Congregation for the Causes of Saints have voted to affirm that he was in fact killed “in hatred of the faith” and therefore meets the technical criteria needed to be declared a martyr.
